Accessible Teaching Material for Portlantis to Inspire Youth for the Port of Tomorrow
On March 22, 2025, Portlantis opened its doors: a brand-new, interactive experience center at Maasvlakte 2. Visitors of all ages can discover the Port of Rotterdam in a surprising and inspiring way.
EIC Mainport Rotterdam Foundation,
EIC Mainport Rotterdam Foundation, an expert in port education for many years, has its own dedicated space in Portlantis and has developed educational programs. Together with the studio of LesLinq (Grafi Offshore BV), EIC Mainport Rotterdam Foundation created digital, interactive teaching materials for primary school groups 6, 7, and 8, as well as for secondary and vocational education (MBO).
A Continuous Learning Path: From Group 6 to Secondary Education
The port education program begins in group 6 and continues through secondary school and vocational education. Each lesson consists of a preparatory interactive whiteboard lesson in the classroom and an excursion to Portlantis. The digital whiteboard lessons were developed in LesLinq and include interactive elements, quiz questions, and visual explanations. A separate lesson and teacher guide are available for each level.
The themes are:
- Group 6: The Port of Rotterdam: Pupils explore the port and learn why it is so important for the Netherlands and Europe.
- Group 7: Sustainable Energy in the Port: Children learn about different energy sources and how the port plays a role in the energy transition.
- Group 8: Working in the Port: As they prepare for secondary education, pupils are introduced to jobs in the port and explore future career possibilities.
- Secondary Education: A lesson that ties in with career orientation (LOB). Students explore the various sectors, the diversity of jobs, and the importance of the port to our economy.
A Great Result
“We’re very proud of the final result. It turned out exactly as we had hoped,” says Lisette Roselaar, educational staff member at EIC Mainport Rotterdam Foundation.
“In the group 6 lesson, students learn about different types of ships and their cargo. A game was developed in LesLinq where students can move around and apply what they’ve learned,” Lisette explains. “Thanks to the clear digital whiteboard lessons and the accompanying teacher guides, all of our lessons can be taught easily by teachers with just a short preparation.”
The lessons aim to spark enthusiasm, recognition, and curiosity. And it works: “The feedback we’ve received from schools has been very positive.”
Accessible, Fun, and Educational Digital Material with LesLinq
The result is teaching material that motivates students, supports teachers, and matches the level and experience of each age group. And it contributes to the real goal: making young people aware of the opportunities in the port and exciting them about a future in this dynamic sector.
“With this teaching material, we aim to create awareness and generate enthusiasm for a future in the port.”
Wider Reach, Big Ambitions
We welcome many schools from the Rijnmond region. But schools from other parts of the Netherlands – and even from abroad – have now also found their way to Portlantis.
“In the past two weeks, we’ve already received 1,200 students,” Lisette shares. “We expect to welcome between 20,000 and 25,000 students per year.”
